Tubal Reversal Surgical Techs
Two surgical technicians at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center describe what they do that makes tubal ligation reversal safe and successful. They describe their roles working with Dr. Berger at the world's only Tubal Reversal Center. In this private outpatient setting, personalized patient care is easier to provide than in a large hospital. The high clinical staff to patient ratio allows the Tubal Reversal Center staff to concentrate all of their attention on the safety and comfort of tubal reversal patients.
Tubal Reversal Surgical Techs
"We are responsible for breaking the room down after cleaning, setting it up for surgery, making sure the surgery gets through, breaking it back down, clean the room. Yea the scrub techs are the first people in and the last people to leave. We can assure the sterility of the instruments, because we are the ones actually sterilizing them. In a hospital they just send the instruments down to a basement room and it goes through a machine that dips into the ultrasonic and something called metralube and a sterilizer and they don't see exactly what happens to it. Typically, we hand wash every instrument. Well, we first put the instruments in an ultrasonic cleaner, which is sort of this tub or bath that vibrates and shakes everything around, and in that is filled with water and enzymatic cleaner. After which we scrub and inspect them and make sure all of the tissues are off the instruments where we then bring them over to the sterilizer, where we wrap them, dry them off and put them in the sterilizer.
Another one of our responsibilities that is kind of unique to our surgical center is that we have a message board which allows us to stay in touch with past and future patients, which is kind of like an online community for people. So women who are interested in learning more about the surgery can talk to women who have already experienced the surgery. And people post pictures of babies who have been born - "Berger babies". So we get on the message board at least once a day and answer questions that people might have. It's a pretty neat place; I really enjoy working here because Dr. Berger really works one on one with us. If we have any questions we are allowed to put our input in. Not a lot of doctors like to hear from their coworkers. Yea and as far as our coworkers go, it's really like working with a family, we really all work hand in hand." Tubal Reversal Surgical Techs
