What to Expect After Tubal Ligation Reversal

All tubal reversal patients receive a "What To Expect" brochure when scheduling their ligation reversal appointment at Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center. This movie explains what to expect after having your tubes untied and what to do once you get a positive pregnancy test.

What to Expect After Tubal Ligation Reversal

Excerpt from Video Transcript

Julia Smith: At the time you scheduled tubal reversal surgery either through email or regular mail you received a “What to Expect Brochure”. That document is really beneficial even after surgery because it does give a lot of information on what to expect after you return home from having your tubal ligation reversal. Most of our patients do return to work in 3-5 days. And are back to the majority of their normal activities in a week to ten days. We prefer that patients avoid heavy lifting, objects more than 15 pounds, avoid sit-ups and crunches for 4 weeks. But, for the most part you can resume activities as long as you are comfortable. The tubes are put back together well. The muscles in the fascia have been sutured back together. So really there is not anything that you could do to injure the tube. But we do like you to avoid anything that puts undue stress on the muscle for about 4 weeks.

One of the most frequent questions we hear following surgery and we typically receive this question two-four weeks following the procedure is that the patient is experiencing a burning or pulling sensation on one side of the incision or the other. And this can be related to a lot of things and in most cases is not anything to be concerned about. And this is something that we typically hear and it’s probably related to a combination of things. Nerve irritation, compression, pulling on the tissues during tubal surgery can cause this. But, it can be relieved in many cases by taking the ibuprophen, or a patient can use an ice pack intermittently. By that I mean an ice pack on for 15 minutes off for 45 minutes, on for 15 minutes and off for 45 minutes. And this should help to cut back on some of the discomfort.
